the cranial remains of the first early human to have been discovered in Africa, exhibiting features similar to Homo erectus but having a larger brain, as of a modern human: found at Broken Hill, Northern Rhodesia (now Kabwe, Zambia), in 1921, it was originally called Rhodesian man and assigned to a new species, H. rhodesiensis, but is now generally accepted as a specimen of H. heidelbergensis.
